The Suicide Squad Ventures Back To Gory '80s Blockbusters

Taking risks after a disastrous flop

If you can take anything positive from 2016, it was a decent year for movies. Marvel released an assortment of films like Deadpool and Captain America Civil War. DC entered the fray with Suicide Squad, leaving moviegoers appreciating Marvel and Disney’s efforts. Regardless, DC wanted to redo Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad is that redo.

The Suicide Squad is a villain/hero action film directed and written by James Gunn who is known for his Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films. Mr. Gunn has been in cahoots with Marvel, and DC viewed it as an opportunity to hire his talents. After many directors left the Suicide Squad remake, DC placed James Gunn as director and writer because they viewed James Gunn as the perfect amount out of looney to reproduce Suicide Squad.

James Gunn did what he does best: add a hint of insanity, gore, and humor to make a deadly cocktail of a movie similar to his films with Troma. Indeed, and The Suicide Squad has plenty of gory action to keep you entertained, and humor to ease those who are squeamish.

The film stars our new Suicide Squad: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), who is as ruthless and flamboyant as ever. The new leader of The Suicide Squad, Robert Dubois/Bloodsport, played by the dashing yet sinister Idris Elba. When comparing him to Will Smith (Deadshot), Idris Elba feels as if he wants to be there and have fun shooting anything that moves. Peacemaker played by the invisible man, John Cena. Peacemaker reminds me of Captain America if he went rogue. This one will come as a surprise, Nanaue/King Shark played by Sylvester Stallone. Have to admit, Stallone, playing a humanoid shark, suits him.

Characters Ratcatcher (Daniela Melchior), Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) flesh out the squad, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller reprise their roles. Join The Suicide Squad as they cease one of their deadliest villains yet. He is so pernicious you can purchase him at a store near you. Seriously, did they have to make the villain adorable? James Gunn must’ve of did it to poke fun at Suicide Squad’s enchanting villain.

Retracting back to the gory action; it takes many tropes from R-rated blockbusters of the ‘80s such as First Blood or Terminator. The film has messy gore and aesthetics, to produce exhilarating action when Squad goes on a rampage.

The humor hits and misses. It’s clever or overstays its welcome. For example, when Polka-Dot Man reflects on one of their allies being dead, and no one seemed to notice. The characters debate for over a minute until it’s halted by an action peace.

When I finished watching the movie with my parents, they couldn’t help but say how foolish it is. Yes, a group of villains have to go take takedown a plush toy. The idea is downright comical, but James Gunn understands it’s ridiculous and uses the redundancy to his advantage, proving James Gunn can make any comical idea brilliant, and we’ll call him a genius.

Overall, The Suicide Squad is a fast-paced gory ‘80s inspired action flick that keeps you pumped up. The humor helps keep the violence bearable, but there are moments the jokes fall flat. The plot is ridiculous but makes it up with smart directing.

DC your on a roll, don’t fail us now.
